In five years at UK, Calipari has accomplished the following:
1-Elite Eight
3-Final Four’s
1-National Runner Up
1-National Championship
Like Mike DeCourcey wrote at The Sporting News, that’s an unprecedented run of success in college basketball.
And he does this with basically a new team every season. No shame in finishing second when you start five freshmen and have two sophomores providing major minutes off the bench.
Cal is ripped by some for his philosophy (although his critics never seem to mention he’s working within the rules) but what I’ll be interested to see next year is if the same standard is applied to Duke and Coach K, who is expected to have at least three “one and done’s” on his roster.
The same folks who insanely suggest Cal shouldn’t recruit those “type players” should be screaming that K shouldn’t either. (But I wouldn’t hold my breath that they will…)
