‘Mr. Unreliable’: Oklahoman sports editor apologizes for Durant headline

Considering Kevin Durant is in the midst of a Hall of Fame career with Oklahoma City, labeling him “Mr. Unreliable” in a blaring headline seemed way out of line.

After his phone and computer surely blew up, Oklahoman sports editor Mike Sherman issued an official apology. He wrote:

We take great pride in our headlines about big sporting events and news in Oklahoma. Thursday’s headline in The Oklahoman on Kevin Durant’s performance in the Memphis series missed the mark.

The words were overstated and unduly harsh. The headline and presentation left the impression that we were commenting on Durant’s season, career or even character. We were not. We were referring only to the Memphis series.

The fact the headline and presentation left that impression with so many readers is proof that we failed.

  1. Mr. Sherman,
How could you even think to write such harsh words about one of the greatest athletes. Walk a mile in his shoes. Could you do half the things that Kevin does? I didn’t think so. Be thankful for having such a great athlete in your town rather than criticize the first down game he had. One last thing if you want to officially apologize, try using the words “I” instead of “we”. You wrote it, so talk full responsibility and say I’m sorry

  2. I was horrified to see the. Infamous Headline ! We are priviledged to have The Thunder. It is not the same here as it is in Miami, Chicago, Detroit, or LA. Our city is small enough that the players are a part of our community and we don’t trash them.

Your headline did not match the picture. Who else was triple and doubled teamed so much?

I bet all of Oklahoma is awaiting your headline for tomorrow.

    Do it right!

  3. Yes you were wrong. Shame on you for letting this go to print. This reporter needs to GO!

  4. Westbrook said it best—-just couple weeks ago he was best player of season Now Mr unreliable? Obviously, whoever came up with headline should find another line of work. Probably a nerd that never played a sport in his life. Consider tiddly winks or jacks. Kevin is such a stand up man he did not bat an eye… A true champion.
