North Carolina is not going to like this story from Bernard Goldberg. The latest Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, tonight at 10 p.m. on HBO.
Also, Andrea Kremer has a compelling piece on a former tennis player who became one of the world’s top ultra marathoners as a way to battle debilitating seizures.
Yet even after the provost at UNC told Bloomberg News a few months ago that the fraud involved in many cases just athletes the NCAA does nothing.
UNC and Duke are their poster boys for all that is right and good in college sports. OK…..
In fact those schools are as corrupt as everybody else. Why aren’t they being stripped of titles and such?
I mean you’ve got the UNC situation which involves two championship basketball teams while at Duke the names of Corey Maggette and Lance Thomas still make you shake your head and ask what could the NCAA POSSIBLY be thinking by letting that go unpunished.
The story in S.I. last year about how the NCAA operates is telling especially the comment from folks who worked there that (paraphrasing) ‘the NCAA targets certain individuals and schools.’
Concerning the UNC story: This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about it. But one thing we know for sure — if a footballers’ step-father takes benefits from would-be unsanctioned “marketeers” with zero connections to said school that that university knows nothing about — well — the NCAA will attempt destroy that school’s football program. Meanwhile, the ultimate cases of “lack of institution control” go pretty much ignored. Miami? Oregon? PennState? What a joke. Someday, the NCAA will just go the way of the BCS, into the trash bin of history.
